What is Quilting?

-Quilting is a type of sewing that involves putting together two or more layered pieces of fabric, usually with an insulating interior layer that are sewn together with multiple rows of stitching. Quilting has traditionally been done to make quilts-heavy, warm bedspreads or blankets.

-It was claimed that the earliest intact piece of quilted cloth, a linen carpet found in a Mongolian grave, was made at 100 BCE.

-In North America, the first quilts were created for survival purposes. The European settlers who had just arrived needed warm blankets to make it through cold winters, and creating layers of cloth was an easy way to add warmth.

For those families that have made a living in North America, quilting has become less about function and more about creating beautiful works of art.

Types of Quilts There are three basic types of quilts:

1) Pieced Quilts

2) Applique Quilts

3) Whole-Cloth Quilts

Parts of a Quilt Most quilts are made using the “sandwich method”, meaning that they have at least three layers. Top – The topmost (or front) layer of a quilt. This is usually the part of the quilt that is decorated with intricate patchwork patterns or appliqué. Batting – A layer of padding to add weight and warmth to a blanket.

Back – The bottom layer of a quilt. This is usually a whole piece of fabric.
