The Hand Is The Window On To The Mind|thecraftproject|

The hand is the window on to the mind. - Immanuel Kant

Tracing back from evolution, the hands make the most varied movements, movements that since we were born can be conscious as well as unconscious in nature, of all our limbs. They have been the primary source of language and communication and have played an important role in the development of human skills, intelligence, and conceptual skills. They have the tendency to define one's craft as well as occupation belonging to the same genre of the species yet holding the capabilities of creating unique individuals. Considering every activity that we perform no matter how small, they have a role to play, they have stories to narrate, they act as a tool itself. Also, the tool is described to be an extension and specialization of the hand. It in itself provides extra capacities for the hands' abilities. It speaks of how a craftsman needs to embody the tool through the hand to translate the language of the mind. In coordination with the brain, they provide a vision. As described in the book- The Thinking Hands; the brain is hand and hand is brain and their interdependence includes everything is very much justified since many times we may find or realize that we are not able to perform certain tasks no matter how hard we try, the collaboration plays an important part in what we do and how we do it.

The video explores various tasks/skills performed by the hands in our immediate surroundings, all with a different mode of intentionality, requirements, coordination, and tool acting as an extension of the hands.

  • In order to assess the shape, size, texture and weight of the object, our hands respond in different ways as it is used, in both the grasping and lifting of an object. This also depends on the correct interpretation of the brain, which is seen to respond appropriately to the hand.

  • It has been used as a form of symbol (BJP) , gesture (NAMASTE) and language (SIGNS).

  • We mainly make use of our thumb and index fingers. The strongest finger is the thumb and majorly rest of the fingers provide support.

  • The intensity of pressure applied in lifting, grasping or opening (the power : opening the lid of a container and the precision grip: holding a pen while writing) varies from object to object.

  • The skin of the fingertips feels more sensitive to touch than other parts and there comes a very fast sense on respond or any reflex actions.

  • How we hold or grasp an object is highly dependent upon the size of our hands as well as the design of the object.
