Technology and software programs have reduced the amount of time it takes to design, make patterns, cut, and sew garments, making new styles available to consumers every two to three weeks. As the clothing industry became more market-driven and clothing is being seen as disposable, the consumer is more likely to wear the clothing only a few times before discarding. And all this discarded as well the amount of waste fabric generated is just adding up to the landfills!
To understand how sustainability works in the context of a garment, the first step is to have a fair knowledge about how a garment has been constructed together. Knowing this would help us define the amount of fabric used to make that garment as well as the amount of fabric wasted during the process and also different types of fabric (if used) for construction. Therefore the best possible way to understand this process is to rip and De-Construct the garment!
All we need is a Seam Ripper !!

Take Aways:
This exercise helps to explore and understand how pattern making and garment construction works . How these bits and pieces adds up to create a silhouette .
It also provides a good understanding of the patterns shapes, size , curves ,lines, trims etc .
Be patient while ripping off the pieces ! Do not rush, it might damage the fabric specially garments with light weight.
Take off the trims carefully as they can damage the original shape of the fabric.
Also, keeps the trims, don't throw them away. They can be reused instead of buying new ones!
